Our Structure

Churches practice differnet things when it comes to leadership and structure. At GBC, we seek to derive our structure from the New Testament. Our constitution explains our structures more fully, but our church could be described as an Elder led, Deacon served, Member Accountable, and Autonomous Church of whom Jesus Christ is the head. Each of those terms will be described below.

This means that our church is led by a team of pastors/elders/overseers. The Bible uses these terms interchangably. Like shepherds of a flock, our elders lead the family of GBC in preaching, teaching, discipleship, discipline, and pastoral care. Elders equip the members of GBC to serve the Lord Jesus with their own gifts. The main role of our elders is the ministry of the Word of God and of Prayer. We believe God has reserved the role of elder for called and qualified men whom the elders have recognised and church affirmed as such in this place. God has blessed us with 4 current elders, each with his own gifts & abilities. See 'our Team' for more information on our elders.

Deacons in our church are absoutely essential servants. The Bible speaks of these servants as faithful and exemplary Christian men and women charged with serving the church in physical needs so as to free up Elders for their ministry. GBC is blessed with many faithful servants who ensure things such as administration, finance, building maintenance, media, ministry organisation, member care, are taken care of. Our deacons delegate these responsibilities other Christians to share the load.

There is no such thing as 'CLERGY' and 'LAITY'. We believe that every Christian has the same Holy Spirit, every Christian is a full-time minister, and that every Christian has the same responsibilty to make disciples as the next. Jesus Christ is the head of Glenrothes Baptist Church, and it is up to every member of Glenrothes Baptist Church to minister to one another, to belong, to serve using their gifts, and to ensure we are following Christ's lead together. As part of the body of Christ, one way members of GBC discern the mind of Christ is through members meetings. Elders lead but every member discerns together God's will and votes accordingly. In this sense, we have a "congregational" style of church governance.

This means that we are self-governing. Members of GBC are free to follow Christ together without being directed by an outside denominational entity. As a church, we believe what God's Spirit has led us to believe in His Word; we own our own building, pay our own bills, call our own pastor, support our own missionaries, and determine our own ministries under the guidance of Christ. With this said, we are not alone! We are small part of the true Church worldwide and interdependently partner closely with many other Gospel centered, Christ exalting, God glorifying churches across the world.
